Program Format


World Congress-Plenary Sessions
There will be plenary session dedicated to matters such as clinical outcomes, mechanisms of action and cost-effectiveness/health care policies.
A symposium will be dedicated to the role of the gut in obesity and diabetes.

Each plenary session will consist of 1 to 3 “state of the art lectures” followed by an expert panel debate.

Each lecture is meant to provide a review of available data including yet-to-be published findings that authors accept to disclose at this meeting. 
The lecture(s) will be followed by an interactive expert panel discussion as well as a Q&A time with the general audience. 

DSS - Plenary Sessions
Prior to the meeting in London, the group of experts will develop draft guidelines based on evidence from a systematic review of available literature, using the Delphi method of consensus conferences. Proposed guidelines and supporting evidence will then be presented during dedicated plenary sessions of the 3rd world congress on interventional therapies in London, where they will be debated by other thought leaders in the field of diabetes and surgery not involved in the generation of such guidelines. 

The document will also be open for public input from the audience at large through an electronic voting system that will record the degree of agreement for each proposed guideline. On the last day of the congress, the expert group will vote a final consensus document which will be then submitted to the diabetes organizations for review and possible endorsement.

After the morning plenary sessions, the Faculty and the audience will divide in 3 separate rooms: “Clinical Track Room”, “Research Track Room” and “Policies” Room for workshops and presentations of accepted abstracts.



  • Development of new recommendations/ guidelines for integrated, multimodality treatment of type 2 diabetes - DSS-II
  • Epidemiology and economic impact of diabetes 
  • Impact of metabolic surgery on cardiovascular risk
  • Role of integrated surgical and medical approaches for diabetes (multimodality therapies)
  • Mechanisms of action of bariatric and metabolic surgery
  • Novel technologies and gastrointestinal devices for diabetes
  • Cost effectiveness of surgery as a treatment of diabetes
  • Addressing barriers to proper health care utilization: beyond stigma, misconceptions and discrimination
  • Developing adequate health policies for improved, equitable access to surgery
  • Role of the gastrointestinal tract in glucose metabolism
  • Gut hormones, microbiota, bile acids, nutrient sensing and intestinal glucose metabolism in physiology, obesity and diabetes
  • Challenging conventional paradigms of diabetes and obesity: a debate by leading scientists in the field
  • How the study of the mechanisms of surgical control of diabetes can lead to the discovery of novel targets for drug development.​
